BVA Update - Spring 2013

After our successful landscape improvement projects in 2012, the BVA Board wasn’t quite sure what would happen next. We didn’t have the funds to take on more projects (though we always have a long list of ideas). While community residents and visitors have been extremely generous, contributing more than $40,000 to our beautification efforts, by late summer 2012, we weren’t enthusiastic about launching yet another fund-raising campaign.
Then we got a call from Juanita Hayes, Public Affairs Manager at San Diego Gas & Electric. SDG&E had played an enormous role in 2011-12 by bringing in crews and equipment to help us plant more than 80 trees along Palm Canyon Drive, and they wanted to help even more. Juanita suggested that the BVA and the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce join forces to develop a mutual wish list of improvement projects that could be funded through an SDG&E community grant program.
By October, the BVA and Chamber teams had identified a number of “shovel ready” projects for SDG&E’s consideration:
  • A large-scale Visitor Directory Map to be installed just west of Jilberto’s, identifying shopping, dining, information, and attractions
  • Desert landscaping on the northwest lot facing Christmas Circle – a drab, empty expanse right at the entry gateway to town
  • A landscaped walking path linking the western edge of the parking lot of The Mall to the pocket park just west of Jilberto’s
  • Design and improvements for a new parking lot for the Borrego Art Institute
  • A maintenance fund to ensure we can properly care for landscape improvements
In November 2012 SDG&E awarded us $30,000 to plan, design, and implement the projects, and we got right to work. The efforts absorbed us through the season, and a few are not yet complete, but are well on their way. Five months later, on April 12, 2013, we welcomed the SDG&E team and representatives from San Diego Supervisor Bill Horn, US Representative Duncan Hunter, California Representative Joel Anderson, and State Assemblyman Brian Jones for a festive dedication ceremony themed “In the Spirit of Community.”
It was a fitting end to the season and a testament to what individuals, community organizations, and corporations can accomplish when there’s a shared vision, commitment, and goal. We are enormously grateful to San Diego Gas & Electric for recognizing our efforts to improve the appeal of the town we all love so much and for their contributions to help make Borrego Springs an even better place to visit and live.
